Metaphysics in Levin's Ethics (As A First Philosophy)

Master Abstract

Abstract This study stands on the "metaphysics of ethics for Levinas" (Ethics as a first philosophy), which relates to altruism that determines the pattern of the relationship between the ego and the other ethically, and whose basis is the moral responsibility dictated by the face. Existentialism turned to ethics, making it the first philosophy. He stood against ontology and against any philosophy that called for the centralization of the ego, the marginalization of the other, and the elimination of his rights. According to Levinas), the face is what prevents the killing of the other through the saying “Do not kill.” The face is the reality and identity of the other. She speaks through the face, just as Levinas, through the metaphysics of morals, counteracts the inferior view that views the other with contempt or inferiority on the part of the self. Thus, the study of the metaphysics of ethics in Levinas (Ethics as a first philosophy) aimed to answer several questions, the most important of which is to what extent Levinas was able to prove that ethics is the first philosophy? And how did he rebel against the philosophy of the other? And how could the ego's responsibility for the other reach the point of death for it? And how did he make ethics the first philosophy? And turn from ontology to ethics? What is meant by the concepts of “the metaphysics of morals” and the face? Responsibility, and how he outlined this responsibility for us, and what is its relationship to the metaphysics of morals? This study was divided into an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion; Introduction: It included the topic of the research and its problem, the approach followed, the research objectives and the reasons for choosing it. Chapter One: Intellectual influences in Levinas moral philosophy (philosophical influences of Levinas ethics, literary influences of Levinas ethics, and religious influences of Levinas ethics). The second chapter: It included the basis and concepts of ethics as a first philosophy for Levinas, and it consisted of three sections; The first: It included the priority of morals as a first philosophy for Levinas, the second: the metaphysics of morals for Levinas and its relationship to the ego and the other, the third: the inclusion of women in the metaphysics of morals according to Levinas. The third chapter: The premises of the relationship between ethics and religion in the metaphysics of ethics according to Levinas, and it included two sections; The first: deals with the ethical dimension, ethics and the other, ethics and face, what is the religious dimension and what is the relationship between ethics and religion, and the second topic: God in metaphysical ethics according to Levinas. The fourth chapter: The impact of the metaphysics of morals by Levinas on his contemporaries and successors, and included two sections; The first: the impact of ethics as a first philosophy according to Levinas on moral thought, and the second topic: the views of contemporary and subsequent philosophers on the metaphysics of ethics according to Levinas. Conclusion: The prospects included the most important findings in this study. Keywords: metaphysics of morals, the face, the other, the ego, responsibility, the woman.
