SUMMARY
This dissertation investigated internal migration in Upper Egypt (1976-2006) from a geographic perspective with the help of both quantitative and cartographic methods. It has seven chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The introduction stated the significance, objectives, and importance of this research. It also outlined the relevant previous literature, the used methods and approaches, and the challenges the researcher confronted throughout the whole process of researching.
Chapter One: explored population growth trends in Upper Egypt governorates across rural and urban areas, and across the urban capitals of the researched governorates.
Chapter Two: investigated the development and size of internal migration and the geographic distribution of migrants. The chapter, then, traced inward and outward migration and the net migration across the years under research.
Chapter Three: focused on population movement and migration waves across the period under investigation in each single Upper Egypt governorate.
Chapter Four: examined the demographic features of migrants. It overviewed gender and age structure of migrants in Upper Egypt governorates. The chapter also investigated the distribution of migrants by both length of stay and gender across all Upper Egypt governorates from 1976 to 2006.
Chapter Five: proceeded with other demographic features of migrants. It studied such social features as marital and educational status, and economic features as working and vocational status as well as the economic activity.
Chapter Six: examined the factors and motivations behind migration in Upper Egypt governorates, with particular focus on demographic, economic, social, administrative, personality, and geographic factors.
Chapter Seven: overviewed the consequences of migration in Upper Egypt governorates. It examined differences in population size and growth, and the extent at which internal migration have contributed in population overall increase during the years under study. The chapter, then, analysed differences in gender and age structure of migrants and changes in social and economic features, and the role migration can play in population redistribution across all Upper Egypt governorates. Also it focused on the problems faced by migrants in the places they moved to, and future predictions of migration in Upper Egypt until 2026. Besides, it highlighted the available potentials in Upper Egypt governorates as basis for a comprehensive development similar to other regions of Egypt.
The Conclusion offered the most significant findings and recommendations.
