their definition and types. This is illustrated through its application to Abu Tammam's poetry Accordingly, this chapter is divided into threee sections: Section one: Definition of prepositions and consequence of this. Section Two: Expansion of the sentence by non - verbal prepositions. Section Three: Expansion of the Sentence by Verbal Prepositions. 4 - Chapter Two: Expansion of the sentence by using Auxiliaries. This chapter deals With auxiliaries as akind used to expand simple sentences. The chapter also shows standpoints and studies of grammarians about auxiliaries including their definitions and kinds. This is elucidated through its application to Abu Tammam's poetry. Accordingly this chapter is divided into Five Sections: Section One: Expansion of the Sentence by using adjectives. Section Two: Expansion of the Sentence by using confirmation. Section Three: Expansion of the Sentence by using apposition. Section Four: Expansion of the Sentence by using Expository. Section Five: Expansion of the sentence by using Disjunction. 5 - Conclusion and Findings of the study: It inclues the mast important Findings of the Study. Summary of the Study The title of this thesis is "Expansion of the Sentence in The poetry of Abu Tammam. I submitted this thesis to obtain the MA Degree in linguistcs. The aims of the study can be illustrated as Follows: 1- Defining the elements that lead to expansion of the simple sentence and its types, whether nominal or verbal. 2-The attempt to illustrate the relationship between these elements Firstly For Arab grammarians and secondly for modernist researchers. 3- Showing the Significance of these elements on meaning of the Noun phrase, which is the origin of composing the simple sentence. 4- Showing the significance of these elements on meaning of Abu Tammam's Poetry. This thesis cannot be done except after along research in the whole previous grammatical studies, choosing what is suitable for the topic, collecting similar ideas, clarifying meaning of structures, using the systmatic method rather than atomism, distinguishing values that combine not that divide, and abstraction of unchanging factors that govern changing ones. Besides, we have included some modern linguistic schools which tackled this topic. This is not a problem at all. Specuation in linguistic phenomena has created joint relationships between old and modern schools. To achieve the aims of the study, I utilized a descriptive and analytic method. Accordingly, the division of the study is as follows: 1- Introduction It contains reasons of choosing the topic, aims of the study, review of literature, data of the study, methodology, and an outline of the study. 2- preface It deals with single words, compound words, and sentences in the light of old and modern linguistic schools. The expanded compound and the simple sentence are Fully illustuated. 3- Chapter One: Expansion of the Sentence by using Prepositions. This chapter deals with prepositions as a Kind of expansion. It shows points of view and studies of grammarians about prepositions including

PHD Abstract

Chapter 3, or “Syntactic Direction and General Linguistic Context”, deals with two issues pertaining to linguistic context as employed by Al-Andalusi-namely, making sure that the text in question has no precedents, and comparing it to other texts similar to it as far as stylistic features are concerned. In this chapter the researcher sheds light on the way Al- Andalusi draws upon the texts that existed the same time as the Holy Qur’an in putting syntactic directing into effect. This includes both Al-Andalusi’s attempt to make sure about the compatibility between the abstract image and the realization, and the stylistic analysis he did of the Qur’anic texts depending on the poetic texts of the time. Chapter 4, or “Syntactic Directing and the Pragmatic Context”, deals with the dimensions of the pragmatic context in Al-Andalusi’s work. These include depending upon illocution and the perlocution, the ideological and cultural background of the receiver (the interpreter), place, time, addressees, and the circumstances in which the Qura’nic text was produced and received. The chapter sheds light on the influence of these factors on syntactic directing. lt also expounds upon Al- Andalusi’s reference to where the process of syntactic directing ends, and the importance of this referenece in distinguishing exegetical texts from one another. The Conclusion: including the results and the recommendations of the study. researcher has seen to it that the framework developed by Al-Andalusi be thoroughly treated in a way that brings into focus the comprehensiveness and integrity of Al-Andalusi’s ideas. This would make it possible to re-read the body of work on syntax bequeathed to us by our ancestors in a way that is more in line with modernity, and so make it easier to understand by the modern reader and researcher. The thesis is divided as follows: 1- Chapter 1, entitled “Syntax and Context in Exegetical Discourse: An Approach to Abu Hayyan’s Understanding of the Qur’anic Text, deals with the theoretical background of the topic, with special reference to the role of context and syntax in exegesis. In this chapter the researcher investigates key concepts in an attempt to shed light on the elements unifying them and bringing into focus its importance in understanding the Holy Qur’an. The most significant of these concepts are, naturally, syntactic directing and context. Among the less central concepts herein investigated are syntax and parsing. This theoretical investigation of the aforementioned concepts is informed by Al-Andalusi’s exegetical discourse as well as the distinction he made between philosophical syntax and the philosophy of syntax. Chapter 2, or “Syntactic directing and Linguistic Context”, is an investigation of the different dimensions of the linguistic context as defined by Al Andalusi. These are: the lexical context, the phonetic context, the morphological context and the textual-syntactic context. It is also an investigation of how Al Andalusi made use of these dimensions in putting syntactic directing into effect. In this thesis, entitled “Syntactic Directing in the work of Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi through The Boundless Sea Exegesis: A Study Based on Context Theory”, the researcher examines the way Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi dependeds on the context in syntactically analyzing the verses of the Holy Qur’an. For this to be accomplished, the researcher follows the historical approach in dealing with the emergence and evolution of the Context Theory, as well as the inductive approach, which was utilized in investigating Context Theory as reflected in “The Boundless Ocean”, a Qur’anic exegesis written by Al-Andalusi, and comparing the theory’s manifestations in the exegetical text with the theoretical postulates and practices of other Arab scholars, grammarians and linguists. The researcher also makes use of the Critical-Analytical approach in discussing many of the issues pertaining to the Context Theory, such as its applications in the field of syntactic studies, both in the Arab world and in the West, and its influence on syntactic directing as employed by Al-Andalusi. This topic was chosen because of the very distinctive way in which Al-Andalusi viewed syntactic directing, and also because of the particularly broad and comprehensive approach Al-Andalusi adopted in handling context and its various dimensions. For Al-Andalusi greatly depended upon context in highlighting the role played by syntax in Qur’anic exegesis. Reviewing the literature on Al-Andalusi’s exegesis has shown that there were no studies dealing with the role played by context in syntactic directing, and even the studies that had something to do with the topic did not focus on the different kinds of context and how these have a say in determining how syntactic directing works. Therefore, the present
