Master Title
Re-Reading Iser's Theory as Related to Phenomenology, Anthropology, and Cognitive Theory
Master Abstract
The proposed thesis relates Iser's theory to phenomenology, anthropology, and cognitive theory, aiming to help in narrowing the gap between science and humanities in general, and literary theory in particular. It begins with an introduction to reception theory and Iser's three approaches. Next, the thesis traces the development of Iser's reception theory as related to theories by Edmund Husserl, Roman Ingarden, Herbert Simon, Norman Holland, Robert Solso, Mark Turner and others in order to find out a way of integration among Iser's three approaches to literary theory.
The relationship between Iser's theory and each of the three approaches is examined in the first three chapters with an introduction to each of the three terms: phenomenology, anthropology, and cognitive theory at the beginning of each chapter. The fourth and last chapter emphasizes the hypothesis of the possibility of narrowing the gap between literary theory and other epistemologies through Iser's theory relying on the interrelationship introduced in the previous chapters. The thesis is concluded with an overview summarizing what has been examined throughout the four chapters of the thesis.
PHD Title
The Place of the Concept of “Freeplay” in Modern Literary Theory: A Study in the Aesthetics and Hermeneutics of Kant, Gadamer and Derrida
PHD Abstract
The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction presents an overall picture of the subject matter of the thesis and argues that the unconditioned movement of freeplay works as a defining moment and a point of distinctiveness in Kant's aesthetics, Gadamer's hermeneutics and Derrida's deconstruction. Chapter one discusses freeplay as a driving force behind Kant's subjectivity. Chapter two proceeds to chart the place of the movement of play in Gadamer's hermeneutics and to what degree such a position seems to distinguish Gadamer's ontological view of art from Kant's transcendental perspectives. Chapter three considers the freeplay of traces and differance as the basis for Derrida's decenterment. Next, Derrida's position of decenterment is being analyzed in relation to Kant's and Gadamer's positions of play. Finally, the conclusion sums up the main results of the thesis.
