Prices and wages in Ptolemaic Egypt

Summary Thesis Title: The prices of industrial productions and the wages of its laborers’ in Ptolemaic Egypt ‘ documentaries study. By: Hussein Mohamed Ahmed Yousef. Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Noshy Kasem “Ph.D. UCLondon”. Emeritus Prof. of Ancient History, Ain Shams Univ. Advisor: Prof. Dr. Sayed Ahmed Aly El-Nassery “Ph.D. UCLondon”. Prof. of Ancient History, Cairo Univ. Grade: Ph.D. Field of Study: Ancient History, Greek Roman Period. The Thesis is an exhaustive documentary study. The data are exclusively drive out from masses of original sources: literary, epigraphic and papyrological. In assessing, analyzing and interpreting the evidence, the views of modern scholars are carefully discussed , culminating in refuting some of these views and substantiating others . The thesis comprises five chapters: the first is a careful study of the prices and wages’ components in ancient Egypt. Besides, the industrial development activated by the Ptolemies, is portrayed in the Ptolemaic planned monopolized economy. Nevertheless, the Ptolemaic economic ordinances were influenced by the Greek point of view. In the next two chapters, analyzing the components of the production, Such as, production tools, row materials costs, and productions' pace, profits percentage. In addition to the “imposed prices” been held by the Ptolemies administrative. Some obstacles the effort to set prices of number of commodities; viz. the absence of a calculable base for the known old measure units. Moreover, many of the old productions cannot be conceived modern mind, for instance, clothes, carpets, doors, windows, boats. etc.... In the fourth chapter are several regulations establishing wages payments, productive or time rates, even, (productive/time rates) together. However, “?????” inception show different interpretation by the contractors, who earn their livelihood through supervising productive phases. Meanwhile, laborers earn their wages for their specialization in one phase or two of production operation, according to the above-mentioned bases. Lastly, expense models have been illustrated by documents, indicating the influences of the economic crises and monetary inflation on prices, wages and life styles. Among the conclusions, the distinguished one is the extremely low wages of laborers. In other words, their wages reduced them to the lowest level of existence, just like the majority of the Egyptians.
