Master Title

Geomorphology of Jabal Umm Khushayb Area North West Sinai Penisula

Master Abstract

Geomorphology of Jabal Umm Khushayb Area North West Sinai Penisula The summary The area under investigation is a characteristic geomorphological land unit in the N. W of Sinai extending between lat. 30° 10? - 30° 27 ?N and long. 32° 49 ? - 33° 28 ?. its area is about 880 km2. it aims to study the topographic and geomorphological features, draw a geomorphological map to determine the geomorphological agents and processes through which the area of study was formed. The student used regional, systematic, descripline, and applied approaches, beside the statistical, cartographical, G. I. S., and comparative methods. He depends also on field studies, and laboratory works. The present study consists of six chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by the finality. The introduction includes a display to specify the region and the reasons for choosing the subject, the aims of the study and the approaches which has been followed and the study sources and its contents. The first chapter deals with physical characteristics of the study area. It has been divided into two parts. The first studies the relief characteristics of the area, its slope and its relief ratio as to know its general future and dividing it into morphological units for each distinguished characteristics and features. The old stage has been studied after making the hypsometric curve and analyzing it. The second part deals with the weather items on the factors and processes of forming geomorphological phenomena. The second chapter tackles the geology of the study area through the study of the geographical distribution of the geological formations, the stratigraphy, structure and the geological evolution of the study area. The third chapter deals with the morphometric characteristics of Drainage Basins in the region, such as the areal characteristics, the Morphometric dimention, the form, the relief and the old stage. The chapter studies also the morphometric characteristics of the drainage networks in the region through the study of the characteristics formed to drainage networks, drainage patterns, drainage density and longitudinal profiles. Then comes the study of the relation between the variables of the basins and drainage networks. The fourth chapter deals with the slope analysis of the study area through studying the general characteristic of measured slope profiles. The slope angles and curvature were studied and analyzed. The fifth chapter deals with the sand accumulation forms in the study area through the study of the geographical distribution of the sand dunes and its density, kinds, forms, slopes, characteristics deposits and movement. In the sixth chapter the geomorphological map of the study area was analyzed and geomorphological forms were classified to structural forms, Erosional and deposional land forms. The chapter deals also with the geomorphological hazards as intensive surface run off, sand and mass movement, and the strategies to face their hazards. The conclusion deals with the most important results of the study. The student suggests his recommendations which may contribute to the sustainable development of the study area. The present study also depends on a menu of Arabic and English references and sources.

PHD Title

Landforms Resulting From Wind Action in Kharga Depression "A geomorphological Study"

PHD Abstract

Abstract Landforms Resulting From Wind Action in Kharga Depression "A geomorphological Study" Kharga Depression is one of the main depressions in the western desert of Egypt. It extends between latitudes 24? 10? – 26? 05? North, and longitudes 31 ? 08 ? – 29? 50? East. The present study consists of five chapters preceded by an introduction and followed by a conclusion. The introduction gives a brief account of the depression. It explains the rationale behind selecting the topic of study and specifies the objectives and the bases of the procedures which are used. The introduction also sheds light on the contents of the following chapters. The first chapter is interested in studying the physical and Geomorphological features of the Kharga Depression such as the geology of the depression that illustrates the variations of geological formations. Those formations, which range in age from the Lower Cretaceous to Quaternary, are mostly sedimentary rocks consisting of Nubian Sandstone, limestone, sand, conglomerate and marl. The chapter also includes the relief and Geomorphological characteristics of the depression, which includes a relief- section analysis of the depression. The hypsometric curve indicates that the depression is in its mature stage. The conditions to which the depression was exposed were identified through studying its geological development. The chapter also includes a study of climatic conditions and natural plants. The second chapter deals with the Geomorphological processes caused by wind in Kharga depression. Though the study of the factors which affect the wind action. The chapter also includes a study of the Geomorphological processes caused by wind such as the erosional processes, transporting, and deposition. The third chapter deals with the erosional landforms produced by wind action in Kharga depression. These forms have been divided into landforms with a principal role of wind in forming them, such as Hummocks, Yardang, Zeugens, Desert pavements, Ventifacts, Wind flutes, and Wind Blowouts. The other landforms which wind play a secondary role in forming them such as Inselbergs, Desert tabels, Honey comb, and Desert varnish. Where was the study of the distribution and density of these forms, as well as conduct a morphometric analysis in terms of shape and dimensions, and then study geomorphological stage experienced by these forms. The fourth chapter deals with the depositional landforms produced by wind action in Kharga depression. They are Sand sheets, Sand ripples, Barchan dunes, topographically anchored dunes of various kinds, plant anchored dunes "Nabkhas", and has been studied as follows: ? Their distribution, density, morphometric analysis, and Geomorphological stage of the Sand forms. ? Curvature of the slopes of Barchan dunes and analysis of slope angles. ? Physical properties of the deposits of sand forms. Finally, the fifth chapter deals with the some geomorphological hazards produced by the erosional and depositional landforms by wind action as an applied geomorphology in Kharga depression. The study includes the following topics: ? Sand movement and its impact on the road networks, agricultural lands, urban centers and all human activities. ? The effect of the erosional landforms by wind action on human life and activities. ? The study suggests the available methods trying to avoid the geomorphological hazards produced by the erosional and depositional landforms by wind action. The conclusion presents the most important results of the study.
