Master Title
Transportation forms in the eastern Desert and Its Role in the Economic Development Study in Economic Geography
Master Abstract
Transportation forms in the eastern Desert and Its Role in the Economic Development
Study in Economic Geography
The Eastern Desert Of Egypt acts as Egypt's eastern gate .Also it is near to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States which are the most important Arab tourist- exporting states.
Sedimentary rocks prevail in the region's geological structure. These rocks surround the Red Sea Mountains , and their permeability range from 28%-40% , they are of limited solidity . thus land roads and rail road's can be extended in it and airports and sea ports can be setup for no great efforts in spite of the fact that they cost a lot of both their construction as well as their servicing and maintenance
Due to its several valley Eastern Desert is considered an external drainage region .The eater-dividing line divides this draining into 2 girdles:
1Eastern Girdle directly to the R.S.
2Western Girdle to the NILE RIVER.
The Western Girdle is larger in area than the Eastern Girdle . The importance of the vallys lies in the fact that they make the level of underground water near the ground surface, as well as they function as natural opening for both mines and mining.
As the study,s region extends over 9 latitudes, this created a great variation in climate within its different parts.
Through studying the elements of climate it has been found that the last element is the most important and effective one.
Population and populated concentrations are divided in three main regions: east Delta Desert , the coast of the Red Sea , and newly-built cities.
Eastern Desert has a shre of the total Egyptian road network that amount 8.6% the density of the roads according to the total area is 1.5kml100km , the density of the area of populated cities 204kml100person.
As a marine transport we can find along the coast of the Red Sea several sea ports and harbors that are of varying fields of specialization .
As concerns air transport there are 3intr national airports that the shre of the E-Desert amounts to 37% of Egyptian international airports amounting to 8 airports.
Pipeline transport is one the important transport patterns and means in the region because the petroleum production in the E-Desert stands for approximately 83% of the total Egyptian production.
Mining and tourism are two of the main economic activities in the Eastern Desert .
Thus due care should be given to there development .

Transport in Suez Canal Region And its role in Economic Development
PHD Abstract
Abstract
Transport in Suez Canal Region And its role in Economic Development
Transportation Network in Suez Canal Region is variable, it includes roads, railway, martime and air transportation
1-Roads Net work:
a)Highways:
The total length of the highways of the Suez Canal region is about 1972 K.M, it represents 23% of the total length of the state high ways, high ways in east canal represent 53% of the total length of the region roads, including: Qantara East/At –Tur, Qantara East/Al-Arish, Ismailia/Beer Gafgafa, Suez/Noweiba.
In West canal the highways represent about 47% of the main roads in the region, including: Port Said/Zaafarane, Port Said/Damietta, Ismailia/Salihiya, Isamailia/Zagaziz, Ismailia/Cairo, Suez/Cairo and Ain Suknna/Cairo.
The Suez Canal region includes about 518 KM (26.3%) of the total length of the main roads network which links the Canal region with neighbouring region.
Technological advance is one of the important human factors affecting transport traffic in the region, thank to technological means, many axal roads have been established to link the region settlements with each other, and with the neighbor region by Ahmed Hamdy Tunnel, Ferdan and Qantara Bridges are three example of across the canal transport axes, in addition to five ferries linking the two (bank) of the Suez Canal which has no longer an impediment before connecting the region with other regions.
Highways in the region can be classified – according to type of traffic – into two types: passenger transport which represents 67% and goods transport (33%) Accordings to traffic volume main roods network can be classified also to two main peak periods: morning and noon peak, except for three roads only.
For the highways network density, it has been found that roads denity reachs 1 K.M/100person, and 12.8 K.M/100KM2.
According to the roads width, it has been found that the width of three main roads reaches 20 meters, Ismailia/Zagazig, Ismailia Cairo and Suez/Cairo, on the other side the width of the narrowest roads were only 6 meters, Ain Sukhna/Cairo and Ismailia/Suez.
The student used some indexes to analyze the roads network, to measure roads deviation, by using detour index, great deviation was found in the network due to positive or negative deviation, when Quing index was used to measure centrality, it was found that Ismailia presents the main center nods across the region network.
b) Internal roads:
Studing the internal roads network showed that it reaches 2491 K.M Length, 65.6% paved, whereas the dusty roads occupy 34.4%. Ismailia has 53% of total internal roads in the region, followed by Suez 29.7% then port Said 17%.
2) Railways network:
The length of railways network in the region is about 543.5 K.M, that represents 13.2% of the total length of the country railways, 395 K.M OF this network. (73%) is related to the region.
This railways network is divided into two main axes, longitudinal network which streaches along the Suez Canal, it includes two lines, Port Said/Ismailia, and Ismailia/Suez, and cross network which includes only one line east the Canal, Ismailia/Rafah, and two lines west the canal, Ismailia/Banha and Suez/Cairo.
The railways network in the Canal Region according to detour index is considered an efficient one.
The study of transport volume showed that port Said railway station comes first in passengers transport, followed by Suez, then Fayed station . for goods transport traffic, it was found the railway carry stone (Dakshoom) from Suez to port Said, wheat from Suez and port Said to Shubra and Imbaba wheat storages, the network also carries graval from Fayed to port Said, basalt from Fayed to Resswa, and dolomite from Suez to Mansoura and Abu Quir.
3)Pipelines Network:
In the Canal region there is a pipe network includes 17 pipeline used in carrying crude oil (6 lines) and its derivatives (11 lines) the total length of the region pipe lines represents 28% of the total length of the country pipelines, that,s in addition to (Sumid line) which extends from Ain Sukhna to Sidi Krir west Alex, there are also three pipeline for carrying natural gas, which represent 56.7% of national gas pipelines.
4) Electricity power:
In the Suez Canal region there are five stations for generating electric power, which represent 5% of the total number of the country, the canal region is linked to the unified electricity network by six lines with 220 kilovolt power.
5) Water transport Network:
As for water transport the area is linked by the Suez Canal. Sea ports and inland navigation.
Suez Canal is the longest naval canal in the world, with a total length of 193 kilometers, and width extending between 300-365 meters.
The Study area covers four main sea ports: one on the Mediterranean (port said), three on the Red Sea (Suez, Adabiya, Ain Sukhna), and one more under construction (East port Said).
Inland navigation is represented in Manzala Lake which used in passenger transport between Matariya and port said, in addition to Ismailia Canal and its branches. Moreover, there are six ferries linking the two sides of the canal.
6) Air Transport:
Air Transport in the region is influenced by the political factor due to the special status of the region. Four air ways are found at the area of study, with a total percentage hitting 41.5% of air ways nationwide. Only one airport is located in the region in port said, in addition to 4 landing grounds in Suez, Al – Zouitya, Beir Odaib and Zaafarana
Transport and Development in the Suez Region:
1) Industry:
Transport is a decisive factor in all fields in all fields of economic development. There are several means of transport that need to be used in accordance with the commodities transported and the location of the industrial establishments Transport therefore is an important factor in defining the industrial locations.
Type of Industries in Suez Canal Region:
a) Extracting Industries
b) Manufacturing Industries
2) Agriculture: includes
a) Crops
b) Livestock
c) Poultry
d) Apair products
3) Tourism:
Transport is a main factors in increasing Tourism to Suez Canal region, modern transport means have helped the hike in tourism in the region. Flourishing tourism, likewise, has encouraged an equal improvement and growth in transport.
