The Function of the Poetic Necessity in the Poetry of Mahmoud Sami Al-Baroudi
Research Abstract
Poetic necessity means that the poet has a license to use words in poetry in a way not allowed to him in ordinary speech, or sometimes for rhyme's sake. Prose writers also use poetic necessity. Ancients and moderns vary about the use and purpose of poetic necessity, whereas ancients see that poetic necessity is used for the sake of rhyme, moderns see that it is used also for stylistic purposes.
Mahmoud Sami Al-Baroudi uses poetic necessity as other poets do, just a departure from the norm or a license in the hands of the writer. There are manifestations of poetic necessity in the poetry of Al-Baroudi such as ellipsis, increment and substitution. Also Al-Baroudi uses poetic necessity stylistically to enhance expressing some connotations beside its main rhythmic function.
