Abstract: Title of Thesis Subject: Social Problems associated with Poverty:– A Comparative Study between two types of neighborhoods in the city of Beni Suef. Prepared by: Randa Anwar Mostafa Under supervision of: Prof. Dr. Talaat Ibrahim Lotfy Dr. Gamal Mohamed Abdelmoteleb Degree: Master's Degree Specialty: Sociology The study aims to identify the most important social problems associated with poverty problem, the relative importance of each of such problems, in addition to identifying the common kind of poverty in Beni Suef City, the most important features of the cultural environment of the poor; reasons of poverty problem, its most important effects, how to face such problem and the methods of adapting the poor to the conditions of economic neediness. For achieving the aims of this study, to reply its inquiries and to ascertain the soundness of hypotheses which have been drawn up; the Researcher made use of the comparative curriculum, as she compared between two kinds of Districts in Beni Suef City (the poorest district and the richest district). All data necessary for the study were gathered by several methodical tools such as interview form, direct observation, documents and registers analysis, and finally the informants whose assistance has been sought for penetrating easily into the research community. The study was made in two sections including eights chapters: • The first section displays the theoretical frame of the study; it divides into three chapters: - The first chapter indicates the aims of the study and it main concepts. - The second chapter displays the theoretical introductions of study. - The third chapter includes a critical display of the previous studies (research heritage) related to the subject- matter of study directly or indirectly. • The second section of the said study displays the field plan of study and its results. This section includes five chapters: - The fourth chapter explains the field plan of study while the remaining chapters display the study results. - The fifth chapter indicates the culture of poverty and its effect on the social, economic and political participation of the poor. - The sixth chapter deals with the reasons of poverty problem and its results. - The seventh chapter reviews the social problems associated with poverty problem and how to face it. The results of the study proved the validity of the following hypotheses: 1- In the poor districts, the absolute poverty problem prevails more than the relative poverty problem. 2- Poor districts are prevailed by poverty subculture has negative characteristics represented in their manners and lifestyle. 3- From among the most important features of the poor's cultural environment, the weak social, economic and political participation. 4- Low education level is considered one of the most important reasons for the poor's weak participation in the economic and social development. 5- The poverty problem is considered a socioeconomic problem which refers to structural factors more than referring to personal factors. 6- Unemployment problem is considered one of the most problems associated with the poverty problem. 7- There are specific methods applied by the poor which help them to adapt to poverty and the conditions of economic neediness.
