Master Title
postmodern anthropology
Master Abstract
Postmodernism is essentially a western cultural, intellectual phenomenon, embodied a fierce critique pointed at the axial principles and pivots of western modernism project, and promotes itself as the antithesis of modernism. Postmodernism, besides, represents and expresses the ideology of Anglo- American neoimperialism and Globalized late capitalism.
The adjective “postmodern” has been appended to astaggering array of phenomena, from arts to the media to the world in which we live today. The nominal forms, “postmodernity” and “postmodernism” have likewise been used and misused with regard to many enterprises, manifesting wide-ranging connotations, implications, applications and refutations.
Postmodernity may be most easily defined as conditions relevant to many living in present (postmodern) times. These conditions include the circulation of people (Via mass transit), information (via computers and telecommunications), and images and ideas (via mass media) at unprecedented rates. In this situation, cross-cultural interaction increasingly becomes the norm rather than an anomaly, thus changing the ways people fundamentally understand time and space, particularly in relation to the interaction of local and global knowledge. Postmodernity concentrates on the tensions of difference and similarity erupting from these globalization processes.
The “post” in postmodernism simultaneously makes a temporal and an intellectual relationship to modernism. Postmodernism constitutes a critical scrutiny to Enlightenment ideals (science, Rationality, universalism, ...etc) that composed the foundations of modernism. Postmodern Anthropology is one of postmodernism’s main currents. It refuses the pivots of scientific modern Anthropology (1920-1975) and turns it down. As well as it represents a transparent disparagement of western science and technology, and other strands that follow from this central tenet include:
(1) the representation of social life as a “text”, and the elevation of text and language as the fundamental phenomena of existence.
(2) the Application of literary analysis to all phenomena.
(3) the questioning of reality and the adequacy of language to describe reality.
(4) disdain for or rejection of method.
(5) rejection of broad theories or meta-narratives.
(6) Advocacy of polyvocality.
(7) focus on power relations and cultural Hegemony.
(8) Rejection of western institutions and achievements.
(9) Extreme relativism and a tendancy toward nihilism.
This thesis is subdivided into seven chapters, besides an introduction and concluding discussions. Chapter one considers the dilemma of postmodernism and terminology and movement. It deals with modernism (History – Categories and Crisis) in western thought, and postmodern movement: postmodernism through varied perspectives, its categories and statements, its varied manifestations in different domains of knowledge, its main intellectual and philosophical springs. This chapter indicates, as well, terms related to postmodern terminology, particularly these begin with the syllable “post”: Post structuralism, postindustrialism, posthistory, .... finally chapter(1) focuses on postmodern Anthropology, its main statements, theoretical springs and developments.
On the other hand chapter two deals with the crisis of Representation in Anthropology and social sciences, and its impact on crystallizing postmodern tendancies in Anthropology. as for chapter three, it resorts to discuss truth and theory between modernism and postmodernism; the postmodernist critiques directed to modernist conception of truth. In addition it concentrates deeply on the postmodern critiques pointed at meta-narratives in the context of an experimental monent in Human sciences. In this chapter new strategies presumed for postmodern theorizing. chapter four, however, tackles the problem of epistemology and methodology in postmodern social sciences. As to chapter five, it discusses the poetic and textual trun in postmodern Anthropology. Chapter six, on the other hand, is conerned with the concept of “culture” between modernism and postmodernism, for it can uncover or unearth trasformation from modernism to postmodernism in socio-cultural Anthropology. Chapter seven, However is an attempt to unmask or disclose the logical and Moral dilemmas of postmodernism, through a meta-critical Anthropological perspective or spyglass. And finally I indicate and shed light on different scenarios presumed for the future of postmodernism in social science, and discuss some relevant concluding issues regarding postmodernism in social sciences and Anthropology.
